The City of Elgin

Boasting an equable climate, Elgin is Scotland’s smallest and, reputedly, friendliest city although in truth it feels more like a small country town than a heaving urban area.

Just 36 miles from Inverness and 64 miles from Aberdeen, Elgin is the administrative and commercial capital of Moray in North East Scotland.

The city has a rich historical heritage and is close to the Spey Valley with its agriculturally rich farm land and the Cairngorm National Park and the well known fishing villages of Buckie and Lossiemouth on the coast.

Elgin is surrounded by attractive countryside and woodland and the local industries are predominantly made up of world renowned food processors such as Baxters of Speyside and the even more famous whisky distillers that occupy the Spey Valley and surrounding areas.

The ruins of Elgin Cathedral dating back to 1224 are a major visitor attraction while Pluscarden Abbey, six miles from Elgin town centre, is one of Scotland’s most unusual attractions.

The interesting mediaeval street plan of Elgin is still well preserved. The main street widens to the old cobbled market place, now known as the Plainstones, and is linked to parallel streets by a series of narrow wynds and pends. A few buildings still retain the arched facades which were typical of early eighteenth century Elgin.
